Dress Socks for Big Feet in Japan: A 12-Pack I've Bought for Years

I have big feet — around 29 cm, which is roughly a US men’s 11.5 / EU 45. Sneakers that size you can find if you look. What’s genuinely annoying in Japan is business socks.

Normal dress socks here are often just a bit too small for me. I can get them on — but stretched over a foot that’s too big, the toe wears through fast.

A hole in your sock, in a suit

For everyday life, fine. At work it’s a problem — you go to a restaurant with tatami seating, take your shoes off, and there’s a hole in the toe. I’d rather avoid that. For work I care less about socks looking good and more about them being clean and not a minus. So I want socks I can wear hard, wash, and replace when they get tired.

What I’ve used for years

They go on easily even at my size. They’re durable — the toe blowouts I used to get just don’t happen with these, in my use. They’re long enough that when your trouser leg rides up while sitting, you’re not showing skin. The elastic is right for me, I’ve had no issue with sweat or smell, and the black hasn’t faded in the time I’ve used them.

Twelve identical socks is the real win

They come as a set of twelve, all the same. Wear hard, wash hard, rotate — no single pair gets destroyed. But the bigger thing is that they’re all identical. No searching for a match after laundry. No thinking about left and right. One drawer, dump the clean ones in, take two in the morning. Done.

I don’t want to think about socks in the morning

If you enjoy socks as part of dressing, great. I’m the opposite. Work mornings have enough decisions in them. Anything I can stop deciding, I do. Work socks are these. When a pair gets tired, I bin it and top up — easy, because I have a lot of the same ones.

If you have big feet and wear a suit

Anyone with large feet knows how much of a chore it is to re-source things that fit. Find one that works and make it the default. I’ve used these for years: fit a ~29 cm foot, durable, long enough, stockpile-able, no matching. Not exciting. But for something you use every workday, “wear it without thinking” is exactly what I want.
