Listerine Original in Japan: Why I Use the Harsh One

At work, “don’t make things unpleasant for the other person” matters a lot to me — and that includes how you present yourself. You don’t need to be stylish or wear expensive things. But not being a negative for the person across from you does matter.

The tricky part is smell. You can check your clothes in a mirror and fix your hair yourself. Bad breath you mostly can’t detect on yourself — and the other person will almost never tell you. So you have to stay ahead of it on your own.

The Listerine Original I actually use.

Why the plain one

In Japan you’ll see a wall of Listerine variants — Total Care, purple, green, and so on. I’ve used the others, but I keep coming back to Original, because I like how it feels.

Listerine Original is harsh. First-timers often go “what is this.” But I like the strong sting and the dry, clean finish. Some of the other versions read as slightly sweet to me, and I can still taste them afterward. Original doesn’t do that — strong going in, but genuinely clean afterward. When my mouth feels off after eating, this resets it.

This is purely preference. If you don’t like intense mouthwash, it’s not for you. But if sweet-tasting rinses bother you and you want something that just leaves you clean, it’s worth a try.

“Don’t create a minus”

For grooming — clothes, hair, breath — I care less about scoring points and more about not creating a negative. You don’t need to smell great. You just don’t want the other person thinking his breath is a bit much — because they won’t say it, but they will notice.

Buy big, use freely

The other reason I like it: it’s easy to make a daily habit of. I’d rather use something I’m happy to use often than ration something expensive. After a meal, quick rinse, done. Buying the large size means the bottle keeps working and I just reorder when it’s low. Low-maintenance.

Bad breath has many causes

Not all bad breath comes from your mouth — lifestyle and health matter too, and mouthwash doesn’t solve those. I use this as one part of daily oral care, and I keep using it because I like how clean it feels afterward. It’s strong enough that I wouldn’t call it for everyone. But if sweet rinses aren’t for you, try Original.

Impressions are personal. Oral conditions and how things feel vary by person. Follow the usage and precautions on the product.
